The Garden (2020)
All photography in this series was taken in a single garden during COVID-19 confinement. I was living in a foreign country with my family when the pandemic hit and we were stuck.
Over the months, our rental and garden felt like a safe retreat as well as a bit of a prison, although we knew we were just incredibly lucky to be safe. This series began with my interest in employing the garden to help me capture the emotional uncertainty, darkness, and chaos of the pandemic through a series of “Coronavirus” images. As time progressed and I grew more intimately familiar with the garden, I began to feel frustrated by its sameness. I started to explore experimental camera techniques and layering images to create something new that I hadn’t seen and could never see in that all-too-familiar place. This work of experimentation and discovery gave me a renewed sense of purpose that helped me through this extraordinary time. It also laid a foundation for my future work of creating new ways of seeing nature.
